Question

What forms of resistance do you think are appropriate for progressive Christians to counter the rhetoric and injustices we are seeing today?

Answer

Dear Thomas:

As progressive Christians, peaceful resistance in whatever form is both appropriate and important in response to the virtually endless avalanche of abuses and injustices coming out of our federal government today.  Letters to our congressperson outlining our concerns are important.  Reportedly, our congressmen and women do, indeed, read the letters we send them.  Over the months and years, these letters of protest add up.

Right now, for example, as a nation, we should be outraged at the lies and "passing the buck" of President Trump (an incurable liar) and Department of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth regarding the unconscionable murder of men in the cargo boat (supposedly carrying drugs) off the coast of Venezuela--all in strict violation of the war powers act and the guidelines of the military manual on "legal" versus "illegal" acts.  About this, we should let our congress people know how we feel.  Not only should Hegseth be fired, but he should also be prosecuted for this act of murder.

Joining organized protests, such as the thousands of "No Kings" protests around the country, can also be effective.  Any protest that requires citizens to actually attend and participate is important.

Town halls are also an excellent way to register our resistance to current government policy.  Recent polls suggest President Trump's approval rating is currently underwater on virtually everything--the economy (tariffs and general affordability), immigration, health care, foreign affairs (Russia's unprovoked war with Ukraine), the Epstein files, global warming, education, and on and on.  Town halls with a local congress person can help send a clear message to Washington.

As Christians, we have to stand up for justice and fairness.  Indeed, as the prophet Micah encourages us, we are  called upon "to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God."  The injustices of the Trump administration demand our response of protest and resistance.  At the end of the day, Trumpism will fall, and it will fall hard.  In the meantime, we must do all we can to expedite its demise.

I hope this is helpful,

~Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Frantz
