Such a Strange Way to Save The World

Column by Rev. Dr. Mark Sandlin on 19 December 2024 0 Comments

When it comes to “saving the world,” I am much more interested in the life and teachings of Jesus than I am in any divinely ordered sacrificial actions that humanity has overly burdened the stories with. Even in the stories themselves, we see signs of the importance of his life and teachings.

Question

Our next election is too far in the future to rely on to make any changes to the new government that will take over in January. What can the average cis-person do who is saddened and concerned for all marginalized people and wants to help protect their rights?

Answer

Dear Charles,

I completely understand the frustration you're feeling as you think about what the next four years may hold for our country and the world. I also deeply appreciate your willingness to be active in protecting marginalized communities.

The best advice I can offer—something I constantly remind myself—is to focus on the community right around you. In challenging times like these, it's easy to feel overwhelmed, anxious and burnt out by the relentless flow of large, looming issues. The truth is, most of us have limited ability to directly influence many of these bigger challenges.

But what we can do is reach out to the people in our own communities, ask what they need, and show up for them as best we can. By transforming the world through small, subversive acts of love, we can facilitate meaningful, lasting change. When enough of us focus on local transformation, the broader impact will ripple across the country. So, start local.

That said, there will also be moments to engage with the bigger issues. Attending protests, joining demonstrations, and contacting elected officials are powerful ways to apply pressure on the system and push back against harmful policies. Both local action and showing up for larger movements are essential in this fight.
